Market Concentration. U.S. equity markets have become extraordinarily top-heavy, with a small handful of mega-cap stocks now driving an unprecedented share of index performance. Today, a historically high portion of the S&P 500 is concentrated in just a few names, a level of dominance that has steadily accelerated since 2020 and has no real modern precedent.

Balanced Portfolios Can Have Uncomfortable Chapters. Even a classic 60/40 portfolio has lived through multiple long stretches of frustration where real returns went nowhere, sometimes for a decade or more. The lesson isn’t that diversification fails, but that patience, discipline, and realistic expectations matter far more than trying to engineer a portfolio that never experiences disappointment.
